Richard Green & Scott Mattern
5:30pm • NO COVER! • Happy Hour 4-8
Richard Green “executing” classic blues songs and delivering rambling, inappropriate commentary.
Green has infested the East Coast blues scene for nearly five decades. He gained notoriety in the mid-70s as leader of the Charlottesville Allstars, cited by Rolling Stone as “just about the best blues band in the Southeast.” RS made particular note of Green’s reading of Muddy Waters’
“Forty Days and Forty Nights” as “an expression of desolation imbued with Biblical wrath.”
Green and Allstars colleague Doug Jay went on to form DC’s Choirboys (along with Dietle’s jefe Thomas Bowes), running through the mid-90s, until the need to feed a growing family propelled him through a series of “soul-sucking big-boy jobs.” He continued to work sporadically as a sideman, briefly resurfaced in the early 2000s in the House of Beauty, along with Bowes, Louie Newmyer, and Jim Steele, and led the Allstars through a series of reunions from 2006-2018.
Decades of noise exposure gradually eroded Green’s hearing to the point where, in 2018, he decided that he could no longer reliably perform with bands.
When the pandemic hit, Green began livestreaming solo sets and now has reemerged, cicada-like, to once again inflict desolation and biblical wrath on an unsuspecting public.
Scott Mattern DC-area native Scott Mattern is a blues and jazz guitarist who has been playing local clubs and concerts since the mid-1970s. Scott is known for his remarkable range, easily toggling between raw blues, jump swing, and classic jazz styles. He has played and recorded with Chris Polk, Ursula Ricks, the Moonlighters, Steve Potter, Flatfoot Sam and the Educated Fools, Fast Eddie and the Slowpokes and many others, and has toured with guitarist/vocalist Deborah Coleman throughout the United States and Europe. Currently he is a member of the blues/rock band Exit 10 and performs in duo with guitarist/vocalist Richard Green

Mark Wenner's “Blues Warriors”
8:00pm - $10 Cover
THE BLUES WARRIORS PERFORM THE 2ND TUESDAY OF EACH MONTH
Harmonica master Mark Wenner goes non-stop. As the founder/leader of the blues and roots rock band, The Nighthawks, he’s been kicking out great music for over 50 years. The Nighthawks have amassed a release collection of nearly 30 albums, and Wenner has released four solo projects. Now, he brings us Mark Wenner’s Blues Warriors.
“This band is actually a blues band,” says Wenner, addressing comparisons to the ‘Hawks. “The Nighthawks are a blues and roots-rock band. This band, with upright bass, is more authentic, old school and swinging. It’s closer to the Cash Box Kings than J. Geils; a whole different animal.”
Charlie Bryant
5:30pm • Happy Hour Prices! • NO COVER!
sings and plays mid-century modern singer-songwriter music. What’s that? Don’t ask him; he made it up.
Charlie writes (and covers) songs about love, loss, hope, bewilderment, wistful longing, busted romance, modern technology, existential dread, and (of course) drinking.
If country music is three chords and the truth, then what Charlie’s after is four chords and the ambiguity. And you can't spell ambiguity without Am.

Themes are cultivated, nurtured and destroyed on meandering planes established by guitar, synth and other sonic devices (Andre Radloff). Soaring and catchy, masterful trumpet (Ralph Burrows) transports us to other spheres.

Linwood was featured on the cover of Washington Post Magazine in their story highlighting the “Year of the Blues” and over 20 years ago, he was honored in Living Blues Magazine as one of the “Top 40 Under 40” blues guitarists.
Mike Westcott - Guitar and Vocals
"Explosive guitar solos …. With a classic rock feel that sounds familiar, and plenty of twists and turns to keep things fresh ….” - Scott Paddock, Mobtown Music Guide
One of DC’s long-time favorite frontmen, 5-time International Blues Challenge Finalist, and multi-award winning guitarist, Mike grew up in Rockville as a child of passionate working musicians. He spent countless hours spinning 45s and LPs from his parents extensive record collection—Rock, Soul, Country and Jazz and everything in between. Mike began collecting his musical skills like bottle caps, playing drums, piano, saxophone, bass, and guitar while performing simultaneously in jazz band, marching band, concert band, and orchestra. His mother made sure that he had the instruments necessary to continue his musical journey. It was the guitar, however, that stole his heart, and Mike developed his own dynamic and expressive style steeped in the sounds of 60s and 70s guitar royalty.
Sirsy

“One of most powerful and flexible voices you’ll ever hear. Songs with more hooks than a tackle box.(-Times Union, NY)
SIRSY is a rock, pop, and soul duo from Upstate NY. They write honest songs, full of sing along melodies, with lots of heart and just the right amount of sass. “It’s edgy-feel-good music that’s fun to watch”. (–The Houston Music Blog).
The Boston Globe call SIRSY “the little band with the big sound.” SXSW Music Blog says “SIRSY is NOT simply a two piece, the sound they make is a head scratching, WOW!” SIRSY is fronted by charismatic vocalist/ drummer Melanie Krahmer who has “one of the most powerful and flexible voices you’ll ever hear.” (–Times Union) At live shows, Mel also plays bass on a keyboard with her drumstick & throws in a few mean flute solos too. Guitarist, and Mel’s husband, Rich Libutti plays a road worn and well-loved Rickenbacker guitar through a pedal board full of vintage effects. Live, Rich also plays bass on a pedalboard with his feet. So, these multi-instrumentalists manage to sound like a full band, despite there being just two of them. And somehow, they do it all with big smiles on their faces. It’s clear they love what they do. And that love is contagious when you see them live. You can’t help smiling along with them. Their energetic show often includes stories from the road, laughter, dance parties, and even Rich’s nerdy Star Wars jokes.
“Edgy-feel-good” and fun to watch…”(-Houston Music Blog, TX)

Human Country Jukebox
9pm • $10 • Tickets on Eventbrite and at the door if available
Human Country Jukebox, created by singer-songwriter, guitar-picker Jack Gregori, has its roots in rabble-rousing outlaw country bands from the good old days in the deep South. HCJ claims no hometown – “No town can hold me,” Jack insists with a slight wink – but you’ll swear this band comes straight outta North Texas.
Front man Jack Gregori grew up singing and playing whatever musical instruments were around him. “I got hooked when I was a kid in the 80’s and watched The Blues Brothers movie. That opened it up for me and I haven’t stopped since.” Eventually, Jack started performing at open mic nights. By 2010, he had picked up some local musicians, beginning the evolution into the Human Country Jukebox band. Since then, the band has performed well over a hundred times, mainly in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area.
The name Human Country Jukebox actually refers to Jack himself. He’s memorized more than 200 country-western hits. Shout out the name of any song at one of their shows, and you’ll discover that HCJ can wing anything.
Taking requests and interacting with the audience is a signature of every HCJ performance. Audiences can expect a different show every time, filled with creative improvisations and reinterpretations of classic country tunes. Just don’t yell out “Sweet Home Alabama.”
The Shambles • Hard-Core Troubadours
9:00 PM • $15 • Tickets on Eventbrite and at the door if available
The Shambles • Hard-Core Troubadours
The Shambles No band was more aptly named than The Shambles. They pretty much were always in that state. They rocked hard and most of their gigs way back when were in Baltimore. They flew under the radar in the DC area. But...you can find out what the all fuss was about when they reunite on Saturday 11/25 Thanksgiving weekend. The Shambles are Russ Beeker and David Goodfriend from Goin Goin Gone, Tommy Hannigan, Clark Matthews and Pete Kanaras who quit some band named The Nighthawks to play with them. It's District rock n' roll with The Shambles!
Hard-Core Troubadours At the turn of the century there was a roots rockin’ DC area band called the Hard-Core Troubadours. They played roots rock, country swing, surf, cowpunk, texas blues, alt country, and rockabilly. Whatever you call it, it was always danceable and fun! Now they’re back doing shows and adding some new material too!
The band is:
Kevin Driscoll-vocals, guitar
Andy Rutherford-vocals, guitar
Louie Newmyer-vocals, bass
Jimi Lethbridge-drums

More glory came in 2016 when the Slowpokes won the DC Blues Society’s “Memphis or Bust Battle of the Bands,” where they competed against 187 bands and made it to the semi-finals. (From that trip Ed remembers a “great harmonica showcase on Beale Street.”) Success in Memphis led to their performance at the Kennedy Center in March of 2017.
The Slowpokes perform regularly at such events as the Greenbelt and Colonial Beach Blues Festivals, and venues like the New Deal Cafe, the Old Bowie Town Grille, and others in Baltimore, Columbia and Northern Virginia.
In 2019 the Slowpokes will record for first time. They’ll also be headlining at Pearl Street at DC’s Wharf and at The Hamilton, and performing at more and bigger festivals. They’re even performing on the Blues Cruise on the Susquehanna, which leaves from Harrisburg, and other venues as far away as Philadelphia, Richmond, Winchester and the Maryland-Delaware beaches.

The Airport 77's
9:00pm • $15 • Tickets on Eventbrite and at the door if still available
They fly out of Washington, D.C…
No, they're not airline pilots, but they do want to take you somewhere special: to that magical place where tight harmonies, chunky guitars and a relentless beat can make the world right, if only for three minutes at a time.
Guitarist Andy Sullivan toured internationally with beloved Minneapolis country-punk outfit Steeplejack in the 1990s before moving to Washington.
Drummer John Kelly kept the beat in the 1980s D.C. power trio The Item.
After two critically-acclaimed albums with founding bass player Chuck Dolan, The Airport 77s invited Cal Everett into the cockpit. Fans may remember Cal from 4 Out of 5 Doctors, who released two records on CBS.
If you like Cheap Trick, the Cars, the Knack (and Paul Collins Beat, Bram Tchaikovsky, Rick Springfield...) we think you'll like The Airport 77s.

Wyatt Easterling
8:00pm • $20 suggested donation • All Seated Show
Wyatt Easterling’s decades of success in the music industry includes a myriad of roles from performer to songwriter, and as an executive of both a major record label and publishing company. This wealth of experience and accompanying success in all these varying facets of the industry, give him a unique and valuable understanding of the music business.
When Atlantic Records opened their Nashville office, Easterling signed on as Chief of A&R, and started his track record of success by signing artists such as Tracy Lawrence, Michael Johnson, Neal McCoy, and John Michael Montgomery.
Easterling along with Doug Johnson, produced Montgomery's multi-platinum debut album, Life’s A Dance.
Wyatt then partnered with Miles Copeland (Sting, The Police, IRS Records) and formed the Nashville Division of Bugle Publishing Group and Firstars Management as Director of Operations. Easterling brought Keith Urban to Firstars Management and worked at length with Urban in the studio recording the project that landed Keith his first major deal at Warner Bros. Records.
In addition to ushering notable artists into the mainstream, Easterling and Copeland created Bugle Publishing Group’s The Castle, the first of its kind songwriter's retreat held yearly at Miles Copeland’s Chateau Marouatte in France. This event saw great success with a long list of esteemed artists and writers such as Keith Urban, Cher, Carole King, Jon Bon Jovi, Peter Frampton, Olivia Newton-John, and
Stuart Copeland, to name a few.
Wyatt then signed alternative roots artist Paul Thorn into the company for management and publishing. Easterling produced Paul's album, Hammer & Nail along with Greg Wells and Billy Maddox for A&M Records, Los Angeles.
After Bugle Publishing, Easterling decided it was time to get back to songwriting and promptly signed with DreamWorks Publishing. Eventually Wyatt opened Terra Nova Music, his own publishing company in Nashville, which had eight writers on staff.
Wyatt’s songwriting success includes “Modern Day Drifter” (Dierks Bentley),
“Life’s So Funny” (Joe Diffie), “This Time I’m Taking My Time” (Neal McCoy).
Wyatt will release his 5th album, mid-2022, titled From Where I Stand.

Ring in the New Year with The Highballers! @Hank Dietle's Tavern
9pm • $20 • Tickets on Eventbrite and at the door if still available
Known for the marble facades, majestic domes and white mansions comprising its landmarks, Washington, DC is nonetheless a gritty, hardscrabble city built on a hot marshland and swamped in confrontational politics. Like their home turf, the Highballers are as sharp dressed as any modern country act -- but go down more like Jim Beam than the Diet Pepsi flowing through today’s tame, corporate country scene. In the tradition of outlaws like Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard, not to mention mystics like Gram Parsons and the Knitters, the Highballers spin a web of country gold rooted in the diverse backgrounds of their members and the free-spirited abandon of the fiercest gunslinger in the Wild West. The Highballers were born on the rock of guitarist/vocalist Kendall Jackson and vocalist Hope Hudson in 2007, forging a hard-edged, rockin’ country sound built on the duo’s male-female vocal harmonies. After several personnel shifts, myriad gigs and more than a few empty whiskey bottles, the band arrived at its current lineup of Jackson, vocalist Belen Pifel, guitarist Sean Lally, bassist Charlie Henry and drummer Drake Sorey.

Black Kat Boppers hail from down on the South Coast Water Way in Southampton and are 4 fellas who love to play hard boppin’, jump up, rockin’ blues, dance music.
“With The Black Kat Boppers you get to immerse yourselves in that rockin’ feelin’. Think of us as ‘rockin the blues’ if you must, cos that’s the way we roll!”.
Influences include Rhythm & Blues, Jump & Jive, Ska, Doo-Wop with a lucky energy. Collectively, when all brought together, Black Kat Boppers sound is raw, authentic, sincere & unique.
Black Kat Boppers formed after some chance meetings, speculative phone calls and a little bit of fate. A shared love for rockin’ roots music was clear and they haven’t looked back since. There’s been triumphant performances at Glastonbury many times, Port Eliot, Bestival & Hyde Park (with Blur & The Specials). They’ve rocked Notting Hill Carnival, Rockabilly Rave Latitude & Viva Las Vegas, not to mention performing a memorable set with Florence and The Machine at Bob Geldof’s 60th birthday party. They’ve been joined on stage by Damon Albarn as well as working with him in the studio and have regularly had Clash legend Paul Simonon playing with the band. Paul Simonon, who has been a great support to them, also appears on their debut album “Boppin Atcha” and has done the sleeve artwork.
Shaun Young, lead singer of Ameripolitan award winning High Noon (the greatest modern trad rockabilly trio there ever was), plus the Texas Blue Dots, the Three Ringers, lead guitarist of surf-rock group The Thunderchiefs, drummer for the Horton Brothers, the Jive Bombers, and Marti Brom. Special Guests: Jerry McCoury w/Tom Mindte
Big Howdy is a DC-based progressive bluegrass band featuring the duet singing of Dede Wyland and Randy Barrett. The group offers a mix of original songs plus reinterpretations of classic country, bluegrass and roots material. Dede is a nationally recognized vocalist while Randy is a well-established singer songwriter and banjoist. Together with Ira Gitlin on bass and Tom McLaughlin on mandolin, Big Howdy sounds unlike any other band. And that's the way they like it.
Dede Wyland - Vocals Guitar
Randy Barrett - Vocals, Banjo, Guitar
Ira Gitlin - Vocal, Bass
Tom McLaughlin - Vocals, Mandolin, Guitar
We have the honor of showcasing the great Jerry McCoury, brother of Del, a superb bass player/singer and legend in his own right! In addition to spending time performing and recording with Del, Jerry has played music with an impressive list of other bluegrass greats.
Jerry McCoury began his musical career as a teenager, playing in bands in Baltimore, Northeastern Maryland, and Southern Pennsylvania. These included Keith Daniels and the Blue Ridge Ramblers, Marvin Howell and the Franklin County Boys and Jack Cooke and the Virginia Mountain Boys. In 1963, brother Del joined Bill Monroe’s Bluegrass Boys, and Jerry landed a job with Red Allen and the Kentuckians with Porter Church on banjo and David Grisman on mandolin. In the late 60s and early 70s, Jerry worked with Don Reno and Bill Harrell, touring and appearing in their television show in Washington. Next, he rejoined brother Del, anchoring that band with his solid bass playing and a high lonesome vocal style that blended perfectly. Del and Jerry recorded several albums during their time working together. In the 2000s to 2010s, Jerry worked with the Scott Brannon band out of Martinsburg Virginia. Lately, Jerry has been performing with his own band, playing several festivals and concert dates.
Head of Patuxent Music and bandleader of Patuxent Partners, stores an extensive record collection at his studio in Rockville, Maryland.
Tom’s own musical interests lie primarily in bluegrass as well, owing to his own fascination with the mandolin and the music of Bill Monroe. Long before starting the label, he frequented bluegrass festivals and shows in the Capitol region, and developed a fondness for popular performer Buzz Busby. Soon he was playing in Buzby’s band, and Mindte continues to work his mandolin magic whenever the opportunity arises amidst his busy schedule as chief engineer and label head.

Tru Fax & The Insaniacs w/Dot Dash
9:00pm • Tickets at Eventbrite and at the door if available
One of DC’s early and seminal punk/new wave bands, Tru Fax & the Insaniacs, will make a rare appearance at Hank Dietle’s on Saturday, October 19. They will perform songs, old and new, from the band’s brand new CD, “ArtiFax Part 1.”
TFI is best known for the single “Washingtron,” b/w “Mystery Date.” They knew they had it made when Washingtonian Magazine named TFI “worst band” in 1980 (based on the name alone), cementing the band’s status and popularity in the punk/new wave scene. “Washingtron,” which is about a hapless 20-something just out of college who works for her “senatron” on Capitol Hill and sidelines as a “waitron in the lounge of the Hiltron.” Perhaps a greater honor than being named “worst band” by the Washingtonian, The Oxford English Dictionary credits Tru Fax & the Insaniacs for coining the word “waitron.” The band helped close the old 9:30 Club in December, 1995.
TFI’s is: founding members Diana Quinn and David Wells, bassist Julia Kasdorf (a singer-songwriter in her own right) and veteran drummer CB Heinemann. The album and music videos are all dedicated to Tru Fax’s co-founder and drummer for more than three decades, Michael Mariotte. Note: the band is putting music videos up on its brand new YouTube channel, #trufaxinsaniacs.
Come on down, and get ready to dance like it’s 1979!
“Washington DC group Dot Dash, who have come to play as idealized and energized a form of power pop as one could imagine, didn’t grow up in the ’60s; their musical touchstones are in the new wave era: so, more the Jam than the Who, Haircut 100 rather than the Kinks. Their iconic labels are more likely to be Postcard, Rough Trade and Sarah than Immediate, Pye or Deram. While they may have started out in thrall to Wire, from whom they took their name, their progress has been towards crystalline tunefulness.“ – Ira Robbins, Trouser Press
WASHINGTON CITY PAPER: “A peppy adrenaline rush that channels late-’70s mod revival and jangly college rock in equal measure, ‘Flowers’ is the shortest track on new Dot Dash album Earthquakes & Tidal Waves, and like an ideal sock hop song, it radiates ephemeral, youthful glee before it disappears in a flash."
9:30 CLUB: "Dot Dash is from Washington D.C. Their music has been described as garage, power pop, punk, post-punk, indie rock and indie pop. Over the last 5 years Dot Dash has had 5 albums released by Canadian indie label The Beautiful Music."
Chuck Underwood Trio
5:30 • NO COVER!
The Chuck Underwood Trio is a collaborative musical endeavor between drummer Byron McWilliams, bassist Mark Lysher and guitarist Chuck Underwood. The trio’s main goal is to create reactionary improvised music across the complete musical spectrum. Although most of the group’s repertoire is from the jazz canon it is by no means limited to that genre, borrowing from folk, rock, blues, and avant-garde. With equal parts of finesse and energy, the trio creates an irresistible musical experience.
