Big Howdy Bluegrass Showcase featuring: Leon Morris

5:00pm • $15 • Tickets on Eventbrite and at the door

The first Saturday of each month Big Howdy hosts a showcase featuring a special guest!

This month features: Leon Morris

Leon Morris

Canada was a hotbed of country music in the 1930s and 40s, as Leon Morris was growing up in Simcoe, Ontario. The music of Canadian country super-stars Hank Snow and Wilf Carter, also known as Montana Slim, and their emulators was ubiquitous on radio throughout the country. Fans could also tune in mainstream country stars from the United States on WLS (Chicago), WWVA (Wheeling), and sometimes on a clear night, WSM in Nashville. At home in Ontario, Leon's family performed locally with his mother on piano, brother on guitar, two fiddles and an accordion.

When Leon was old enough to start playing, his older brother showed him how to play the G, C, and D chords on the guitar. He practiced his playing and singing diligently and by the age of 13, he was ready to show his talent. The event was a local amateur talent contest for kids near his hometown. Leon took first place by yodeling a couple of Wilf Carter songs.

Prize in hand, Leon was ready to be on record. His brother loaned him a dollar and a half to record four songs at a local radio shop that had a disc cutter. He still has those recordings.

A few years later, a chance meeting helped guide seventeen-year-old Morris toward bluegrass. Migrant tobacco farmer and musician Jim Ross from Danville, Virginia, who was working in Ontario, was playing music with fiddlin' bootlegger Norm Boyles as Leon happened by in his car. Never without his instruments, Leon stopped and joined them on mandolin. This led to the formation of a duo known ad “Jimmy and Leon.” They played all over Ontario until Ross returned to the United States.

In the mid-1950s, Leon joined Canada's first bluegrass band, the York County Boys. The line-up was “Big John” McManaman on banjo, Rex Yetman on mandolin, Brian Barron on fiddle, Dusty Leger on bass, and Leon on guitar. In addition to extensive touring from New Brunswick to western Ontario, the group appeared on CBC as guests on the Cross-Canada “Country Hoedown” show, which later became “The Tommy Hunter Show.”

In 1957, Leon performed as a multi-instrumentalist on television as a member of Lonnie and Lottie and the Po' Folks. Their program, “The Mainstreet Jamboree,” aired on CHCH, in Hamilton, Ontario. He picked up the fiddle, mandolin, guitar, or banjo to accompany the brother and sister singing duo.

In 1959, Morris crossed the border to Detroit to work in the house painting business with his brother. While there, he met Earl Taylor, who had relocated there and was working the bluegrass clubs with Walt Hensley, Vernon McIntyre (Boat Whistle) and Billy Baker. Earl was looking for a guitar player and tried to hire Billy Gill, who would later record with Pete Gobel. Gill was unable to join the band and told Earl about Leon, whom he hired. Shortly thereafter, Earl Taylor and the Stoney Mountain Boys left Detroit in search of better venues. They tried Chicago without any success, finally settling in Kansas City, Missouri. They booked the Buckeye Club and a couple of other bars in Kansas City, where they worked five nights a week. After about two months, some of the band members became homesick for Baltimore, so they headed east.

Upon arriving in the Baltimore-Washington area, Leon teamed up with Bill and Wayne Yates and worked with them through 1962. Later in 1962, he was married, quit full-time music, and started a painting business, settling in northern Virginia.

Leon played with Jack Tottle, working the clubs in DC and Virginia, in 1964 and 1965. They recorded an album for Folkways, but it was never released. In 1968, he teamed up with Buzz Busby, recording the album “Honky Tonk Bluegrass” for Rounder records. They toured and played around the DC area until 1971 Since then, Leon has continued to play music with his own band, recording several albums and employing some of the area's best musicians.

Leon also plays mandolin with Jay Armsworthy and Easten Tradidition and is on their 2020 Patuxent CD “My Best Friend”

This album is a retrospective look at Leon's work and consists of previously released material recorded over the last 40 years.

Big Howdy is a DC-based progressive bluegrass band featuring the duet singing of Dede Wyland and Randy Barrett. The group offers a mix of original songs plus reinterpretations of classic country, bluegrass and roots material. Dede is a nationally recognized vocalist while Randy is a well-established singer songwriter and banjoist. Together with Ira Gitlin on bass and Tom McLaughlin on mandolin, Big Howdy sounds unlike any other band. And that's the way they like it.

Fitzkee Brothers

2:00pm • $10 cover

A Story Steeped in Rhythm

"Fitzkee Brothers" is a group of two brothers who are amazing singers, songwriters and musicians. Post Malone called them, "The mini f-cking Allman Brothers". Nicknamed the "Thump Brothers" for their tight & funky rhythm section, they have been amazing audiences with their killer live performances ever since December of 2018 when they took the stage at their first full band rock show at Dogfish Head Brewing & Eats in Rehoboth Beach, DE. They never looked back, playing their style of high-energy jam band rock & roll almost constantly before intimate and large audiences in DE, MD, VA, PA, CT, MS, FL, TX, OH, & NY. The group recently finished a tour of the northeast United States with Melody Trucks, daughter of famed Allman Brothers Band drummer, Butch Trucks and cousin to Derek and Duane. The Brothers have had the privilege to play with many great musicians including Post Malone, Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady, Justin Guip, Oteil Burbridge, Robert Randolph, Devon Allman, Duane Betts, Vaylor and Melody Trucks, Luther and Cody Dickinson, Joe Marcinek, Eliot Lewis, Paul Cullen, Robbie LaBlanc, Bruce Katz, Jamie Mclean, Jonathon Sloane, Grace Bowers and Tony Sciuto. Their sound has matured and evolved over the years from an "in your face" punk rock to a soulful, funky brand of rock & roll. Their newest release "Give You All My Love" was recorded at 38 North Studios, and produced by Jim Ebert who described the musical group as "Foo Fighters meets Allman Brothers". Mixed by Jeff Juliano at The Shed. We hope you love it! The Brothers next single, "Lakesong" will drop on March 1, 2024.

Drew Fitzkee Bass and Vocals - A Rock Band needs a front man and here he is! "I don't know what 'it' is but Drew has 'it'". Jorma Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna, Member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame). Drew routinely astonishes the crowd with his driving bass lines, inventive solos and stellar vocal. He also loves to leave the stage to join fans while playing!

Alex Fitzkee Drums and Vocals - Alex is a Collision Drumstick endorsed artist. He truly is a secret weapon. Crowds always love seeing him play the drum kit, but wait until you hear him sing his original music! He is a singing drummer and a songwriter ahead of his time.

Amelia White

5:30pm • NO COVER

If there were an East Nashville Music Hall of Fame, Amelia White would already be in it. The now famous scene was in its formative days when White arrived from Boston in the early 2000s and became a fixture at The Family Wash. She’s been a leading light in America’s most musical zip code. Ever since, even as she developed a reputation in the rest of the U.S. and Europe as a first-rate songwriter, she helped define and refine the core folk-rock sound of Americana with her unique sound and her carefully wrought lyrics. She’s a poet who has been compared to more famous songwriters like Lucinda Williams for years now. She has quickly distinguished herself as a new benchmark.

She’s shared shows with Brandy Clark, Asleep at the Wheel, John Prine, and Justin Townes Earle. White has always gleaned song inspiration through talking with people in the cities she visits. “I find that if I truly open up on stage, people want to tell me about the skeletons in their closets.”, says White.

“Over the last couple of decades, East Nashville fixture Amelia White has built a folk-pop catalog that's as unfussy as it is consistent in quality, and full of insinuating hooks, slyly sleepy singing, and lean, jangly backing. "Rhythm of the Rain," the title cut of the album she released in January, looks at the current political frenzy from a seasoned, bohemian remove.” - Jewly Hight NPR Music, August 2019

Miss Tess

When most people think of defiant music, they think of punk rock or outlaw country. But defying genres while transcending eras and resisting clichés is hard to pin down when it comes to artistry—unless you’re talking about Miss Tess. Swinging for the fences and from the branches of jazz, country, blues and old school rock and roll, she has employed all of her influences and talents on a tour-de-force, while cleverly taking standard perspectives and ideas, like the definition of a love song, to task. After over a decade on the road, now making her home in Nashville — by way of Baltimore, Boston, and Brooklyn — Miss Tess has found a creative community that encourages and embraces wide artistic exploration and expression as much as she does.

Ruthie and the Wranglers Memorial Day Weekend Shake Up! w/ Terri and the Back Alley Rhythm Cats

6:00pm • $10 • Tickets on Eventbrite and at the door

THIS WILL BE A TRUE SHAKE UP!!!

Ruthie and the Wranglers

Ruthie Logsdon, Bill Starks, Arch Alcantara and Tom
Fridrich plus we're shaking it up with Buddy Griffin on Steel Guitar and a surprise guest. After 25 years of twang (including recording, touring and Americana/Roots radio airplay) the band remains a cornerstone of the DC roots music scene. From original Americana Country to a rousing Surf instrumental or whisky drenched ballad, their clever lyrics, high energy and heavenly harmonies, set them apart from the rest.

Their Americana/Country roots and their unstoppable ENERGY Ruthie describes as "Loretta Lynn meets the Ramones at Dick Dale party!"

They’ve released 7 albums including a compilation of some favorites from their legacy of recordings entitled All Wrangled Up. Their lyrics were called by Billboard “nothing short of brilliant” and The Washington Area Music Association (The WAMMIES) has declared them emeritus after more than 30 WAMMIE wins including, Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Country/Duo Group.

Terri and the Back Alley Rhythm Cats

It's a Roots Rock and Roll stew that hits the spot.  You'll enjoy a starter of Rockabilly, a heaping portion of Jump Blues and early R&B, along with enough Soul for a delicious flavor—just like Grandma used to make!

Danceable music for fun people drawing inspiration from artists like Wanda Jackson, Janis Martin, Patsy Cline, Ruth Brown, Varetta Dillard, Ray Charles, Wynonie Harris, Clarence Carter, Elvis, and Dusty Springfield.

Leader and Vocalist Terri Burroughs originally formed the band in 2016 and has had the current lineup since 2019.  She has also spent time on stage with The Rock-a-Sonics, Ruthie & the Wranglers, the Thrillbillys, Karen Collins & the Back Roads Band, Daryl Davis and Lunch With Bob. She has been singing since 2015, when she suddenly discovered her ability to sing.  Who knew?

The fabulous Jason Byrd, an artist in his own right, expertly plays lead guitar.  He is unobtrusive but don't let that fool you—his solos are masterful and twisting.

Veteran drummer Byron Williams has been with the band since 2017. (Chuck Underwood Trio and Dixie Power Trio, Jr Cline and the Recliners.)  Behind the drums, Byron has a huge presence and personality and just makes it easy for the rest of the band.

Bassist Jerry del Rosso plays upright and electric bass, and frankly, we can't decide which we prefer.  Jerry has been playing in the area for several decades, and in all genres.  (U-Liners, Hollertown, American Tourister and more.)

 Wyatt Easterling

Wyatt Easterling’s decades of success in the music industry includes a myriad of roles from performer to songwriter, and as an executive of both a major record label and publishing company. This wealth of experience and accompanying success in all these varying facets of the industry, give him a unique and valuable understanding of the music business.

When Atlantic Records opened their Nashville office, Easterling signed on as Chief of A&R, and started his track record of success by signing artists such as Tracy Lawrence, Michael Johnson, Neal McCoy, and John Michael Montgomery.

Easterling along with Doug Johnson, produced Montgomery's multi-platinum debut album, Life’s A Dance.

Wyatt then partnered with Miles Copeland (Sting, The Police, IRS Records) and formed the Nashville Division of Bugle Publishing Group and Firstars Management as Director of Operations. Easterling brought Keith Urban to Firstars Management and worked at length with Urban in the studio recording the project that landed Keith his first major deal at Warner Bros. Records.

In addition to ushering notable artists into the mainstream, Easterling and Copeland created Bugle Publishing Group’s The Castle, the first of its kind songwriter's retreat held yearly at Miles Copeland’s Chateau Marouatte in France. This event saw great success with a long list of esteemed artists and writers such as Keith Urban, Cher, Carole King, Jon Bon Jovi, Peter Frampton, Olivia Newton-John, and

Stuart Copeland, to name a few.

Wyatt then signed alternative roots artist Paul Thorn into the company for management and publishing. Easterling produced Paul's album, Hammer & Nail along with Greg Wells and Billy Maddox for A&M Records, Los Angeles.

After Bugle Publishing, Easterling decided it was time to get back to songwriting and promptly signed with DreamWorks Publishing. Eventually Wyatt opened Terra Nova Music, his own publishing company in Nashville, which had eight writers on staff.

Wyatt’s songwriting success includes “Modern Day Drifter” (Dierks Bentley),

“Life’s So Funny” (Joe Diffie), “This Time I’m Taking My Time” (Neal McCoy).

Wyatt will release his 5th album, mid-2022, titled From Where I Stand.

Charlie Bryant sings and plays mid-century modern singer-songwriter music. What’s that? Don’t ask him; he made it up.

Charlie writes (and covers) songs about love, loss, hope, bewilderment, wistful longing, busted romance, modern technology, existential dread, and (of course) drinking.

If country music is three chords and the truth, then what Charlie’s after is four chords and the ambiguity. And you can't spell ambiguity without Am.

A fan aptly described The Grandsons exuberant sound as “American music in a blender with the lid off.” The more prominent elements in this eclectic whirlpool are New Orleans rhythm and blues, rockabilly, swing, and country two-steps. The Grandsons bring with them a pawn shop of instruments. Vocalist-guitarist-trumpeter Alan MacEwen charms audiences with his sly wit and winsome original songs. DC blues veteran Matthew Sedgley locks in the groove on drums and percussion. Saxophonist Chris Watling puts out a sound so meaty and memorable that he is in demand all over as a guest artist and session player. Moe Nelson holds down the low end on upright bass but has been known to break out the ukulele. Join The Grandsons as they move and shake into their 3rd decade in the world of rock and roll!

The Woggles/Jake Starr & Delicious Fullness

The Woggles/Jake Starr & Delicious Fullness

9:00pm • $20 • Tickets on Eventbrite and at the door

The Woggles - For a band to not only last beyond 30 years together but keep scaling more imposing heights, it’s going to need a sense of purpose. In the case of The Woggles, the seasoned garage rockers passed that milestone with a renewed rallying cry to move ever forward!

The Woggles now feature a two-guitar attack with Graham Day (The Prisoners, Solar Flares, Thee Mighty Caesars) and Shane Pringle (Tiger! Tiger!, Bad Spell) on the 6 strings with Shane occasionally doubling up on saxophone.

The band is touring in support of the new single Mr. Last Chance b/w The Will O’ The Wisp out on Wicked Cool Records (Steven Van Zandt’s label), and is a recent “Coolest Song in the World” both on Van Zandt’s Siriusxm Channel and his syndicated over the air radio program.

The single is from an upcoming album featuring contributions on lead guitar from the likes of Steven Van Zandt (Little Steven), Graham Day, Shane Pringle, Greg Cartwright (Reigning Sound), Peter Greenberg (Barrence Whitfield & The Savages), Rick Miller (Southern Culture on the Skids), Keith Streng (The Fleshtones), and Pat Beers (The Schizophonics).

“The band is not as much an institution as a way of life,” says frontman “The Professor” Mighty Manfred. “The main thing is to keep swimming, cause the shark has got to keep moving.”

The band continues to feature the sock-it-to-them rhythm section of bassist Buzz Hagstrom and drummer Dan Eletxro, both also sometime members of savage English rockers Graham Day & The Gaolers.

Alan Freed once said that ‘Rock and roll is a river of music that has absorbed many streams,’” quotes Manfred. “The Woggles drink from its many tributaries, from early rock and roll and R&B to ’60s garage rock, British Invasion, ’60s soul and forward.”

Fusing pure rock and soul from vintage sources into their own singular sound, The Woggles lay it down hard and loud but with more majesty than recklessness. Their beats and riffs are as strident as Manfred’s swagger and strut onstage. Having played in the past with Johnny Cash, Link Wray, The Zombies and nearly every garage rock group worth its salt, as Meredith Ochs wisely advised on NPR All Songs Considered: “Go see a Woggles show. It will change your life.”

Jake Starr and the Delicious Fullness - After fronting Washington DC garage rockers Adam West for nearly 17 years, soft-spoken, mild-mannered Jake Starr took time off to recharge his batteries. Now he's back to deliver high-octane, garage rock-n-roll with Sean Crowley (guitar, vox), Peter Greenberg (guitar), Louie Newmyer (bass), and Nathaniel Osgood (drums). Think Chocolate Watchband, Easybeats, and Music Machine. Can ya dig it?

Instructors: Ben Pagac & Debbie Shaw

Ben & Debbie have been teaching American roots partner dancing in the DC area, and beyond, for over 30 years. They became the house instructors at the legendary Tornado Alley and Twist & Shout clubs, where their lessons were regularly featured before all shows spotlighting Louisiana bands playing Cajun and zydeco music. They also held their popular dance “immersions”, devoting a whole day to progressive lessons and practices. Additionally they continue to be in demand to teach at music festivals, cruises, and dance camps throughout the US and abroad. They frequently travel to dance halls, roadhouses, and honky tonks, especially in the gulf coast states, to observe, dance, and most importantly to share with others authentic steps as well as the joy and spirit of partner dancing. Their method is relaxed and easy-to-follow, with a big dose of fun!

Big Sandy & The Fly-Rite Boys

Doors 5pm - show 6pm • $30 • Tickets on Eventbrite and at the door

Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys

Since forming in 1988 in Southern California, Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys have become one of the world’s most beloved Americana/Roots acts, drawing from the deep musical waters that flow just beneath the surface of Rock & Roll’s fertile soil. A childhood passion for Country, Doo-Wop, and Rhythm & Blues 45s led Sandy (born Robert Williams) to pursue a singing career as a teenager, beginning a life in music that continues decades later. And as his personal record collection continues to grow (75,000 and counting), so does the depth of the musical influences that stream through his songwriting and singing style. A critically acclaimed tribute to Tex-Mex hero Freddy Fender, released at the beginning of the 2020 lockdown, points the way forward for Big Sandy and his Fly-Rite Boys as they continue on a path of musical growth. After nearly 35 years on the road, and more than two dozen releases to their credit, they remain key figures on the ever-changing Americana circuit, both on record and in live appearances.

Paramount Jazz Orchestra

5:00 - 7:30PM • No Cover

Once upon a time, the artistic creativity of musicians and technology came together to create perhaps the most prolific and amazing change in music the world has known—and all while alcohol was illegal! That would be in the 1920’s when radio, sound movies, music recording technology, and music publishing coincided with the northern migration of people for jobs. The blacks, whites, the new immigrants, and the long time citizens all took part in the synergy and that was dawn of jazz. The American Dream visited music.

Meet an orchestra full of curators—The Paramount Jazz Orchestra. This band has been sharing hot pre-swing jazz since the 1980’s. Their arrangements are vintage and often transcriptions of famous recordings. The ten piece orchestra plays the hit songs of the era as done by the likes of early Duke Ellington, Bix Biederbecke, Fletcher Henderson, Ray Noble, Glen Gray, Cab Calloway and Isham Jones. It is the next best thing to a time machine.

9:00pm • $15 • Tickets on Eventbrite and at the door

The Airport 77s fly out of Washington, D.C.

No, they're not airline pilots, but they do want to take you somewhere special: to that magical place where tight harmonies, chunky guitars and a relentless beat can make the world right, if only for three minutes at a time.

Guitarist Andy Sullivan toured internationally with beloved Minneapolis country-punk outfit Steeplejack in the 1990s before moving to Washington.

Drummer John Kelly kept the beat in the 1980s D.C. power trio The Item.

After two critically-acclaimed albums with founding bass player Chuck Dolan, The Airport 77s invited Cal Everett into the cockpit. Fans may remember Cal from 4 Out of 5 Doctors, who released two records on CBS.

If you like Cheap Trick, the Cars, the Knack (and Paul Collins Beat, Bram Tchaikovsky, Rick Springfield...) we think you'll like The Airport 77s.

Bill Williams

Singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and arranger Bill Williams has been active in the DC music scene since the mid-1980's. During that time, he has kept himself largely out of trouble by performing, recording and/or writing for such notable DC acts as Last Train Home, Jelly Roll Mortals, The Porch Delights, Kevin Johnson & the Linemen, the Tone Rangers, and the HalfSmokes, to name a few. He has been featured in several Bandhouse Gigs and Newmyer Flyer tribute shows (Byrds, Last Waltz, Lovin’ Spoonful, Woodstock 50, British Invasion, George Harrison, Nick Lowe, Linda Ronstadt, WHFS). As a solo artist, Bill blends his original songs with an eclectic mix of his favorites of decades present and past - he might pull anything from Roger Miller to Johnny Mercer, Buck Owens to XTC.
