In the mid 1970s, a group of local high school students began singing together. Anchored by siblings, Sanford and Lena Markley, the four and sometimes five-member band called themselves Brandywine and for 20 years they played to enthusiastic audiences as their popularity grew in the DC area.
In the 90’s, Sanford and Lena started performing as a duo, playing Sanford’s original songs and as well as crowd pleasing covers. They quickly found appreciative audiences
at the Birchmere, Wolf Trap, the Kennedy Center, the Country Roads Folk Festival in West Virginia, the Kerrville Folkfest in Texas among many others. The magic of Lena and Sanford’s sibling harmony along with Sanford’s ability to create a “third voice” with his guitar made them an instant hit with this wider audience.
Through thousands of live performances, the constant is Sanford’s reverence for melody and complex harmonies. Coupled with Lena’s expressive voice and her playful sense of humor, the celebrated fun and lively shows of Lena and Sanford Markley continue to delight audiences to this day.
