"Local Cream" songwriter showcase

8:00pm.- $10 Suggested donation for the artists.

This month Annette is bringing in Rupert Wates from London via NYC, and shining local stars Lynn Hollyfield and Michelle Swan. This is always a very sweet event that truly feeds souls. $10 donation

Introduced to the guitar at age nine by her father, himself a former singer/songwriter, Michelle Swan has pursued a musical path ever since. Self-reflective and acutely observant, Michelle deftly weaves lyric and note together to create intensely personal songs that tell of sentiments and circumstances nonetheless familiar to everyone.

Rupert Wates was born in London, UK, and has been based in the US since 2007.
He signed a publishing deal with Eaton Music (London) in 1994 and has been a full time songwriter ever since.
He has won over 50 songwriting and performing awards. In 2018 he performed as a Finalist in the Kerrville New Folk Song Contest, and an Emerging Artist at Falconridge Folk Festival. He was voted ‘Artist Of The Year’ by the Listening Room Network in both 2013 and 2016. More than 25 of his songs have been covered by other artists, including two full length tribute albums to his material recorded by independent artists in Nashville and Los Angeles.
He has released 10 solo albums, tracks from which have been played on radio worldwide. He averages 120 live shows a year, in every state in the US, in Canada and in Europe.
Colorado Central Magazine describes his songs as ‘sublime folk hymns’, while Folk And Acoustic Music Exchange adds ‘this is one gifted s.o.b…if you’re not hip to this guy you’re missing out’.

Coined as a singer-songwriter, with a ‘feel good, timeless vibe,’ Lynn Hollyfield’s warm, down to earth presence radiates through her music. "Your music is the golden thread - your voice sews your audience to you.” Diane Wilbon Parks, Poet Lynn’s style has roots in contemporary folk, blues and jazz and supports her songwriting as she seeks to connect, uplift and shed a little light in the world. “Your songs, voice, and guitar arrangements, all fit together as a beautiful whole." Bob Gramann, Fredricksburg Songwriter's Showcase

Annette's performances are marked by her compelling alto and moving songs that "touch you to the bone". In the tradition of the poet songwriter, with rich tones reminiscent of Linda Thompson or Natalie Merchant, she weaves a spell both startling in its intimacy and expansive in its vision. Her songwriting influences include Jane Siberry, Lucinda Williams, Mary Gauthier and John Prine. Both down to earth and deeply atmospheric, Annette’s songs are explorations into longing, love, loss, God, home, homesickness and hope.

In her late teens and twenties. Annette was performing in local cafes, small venues and eventually festivals. When her daughter was small, Annette took a break from performing to attend her family and grow her massage practice. Now she is out performing again and becoming known in the DC area and nationally as a powerful songwriter and performer. Annette's debut CD, Songs from the Talking House, was awarded Contemporary Folk Recording of the Year by the Washington Area Music Association in April 2016. She has won Honorable Mentions for her songs Don't Look Down, Highway and Love & Fire in the MidAtlantic Song Contest. Her January 2020 release, Love & Fire, is her first album on the Azalea City Cooperative label. On release, it landed at #6 on FAI Folk DJ chart and #1 on the NACC chart and ended up #40 for the year. In 2019, Annette created a new concert series, Local Cream, showcasing the best local and regional songwriters.
