Years before singer-songwriter Duke Paul became a nightly fixture in the vibrant California music scene that stretches from San Diego to San Francisco, it was the musicians and fans in the state of Maryland who launched him toward his dream. For one special evening, July 29, at Hank Dietle’s Tavern in Rockville, Duke returns to his adopted home to say thank you.
Billed as “Duke Paul & Friends Live,” the Happy Hour show from 4:30 - 7:00 p.m. brings together several musicians who once welcomed Duke into their gigs at coffee houses and clubs from Baltimore to Bethesda after he moved from Maine to Maryland in 2017. Among the expected guests for the evening of originals and rock and country classics are: percussionist Rene Sandoval, drummer Fernando Ventura, sax and harmonica extraordinaire Jordan Feldman, bassist Michelle Kaori, and dobro master Matt Zuckerman.
“I haven’t been this excited for a show in a long, long time,” said Duke, whose eponymous album “Duke Paul” has its roots in a Baltimore studio with Feldman at his side. “The quality of these players is as good, or better, than the people I play with in LA. I can promise a lot of joy and great music in the room.”
