Special Guests: Jerry McCoury w/Tom Mindte

Big Howdy is a DC-based progressive bluegrass band featuring the duet singing of Dede Wyland and Randy Barrett. The group offers a mix of original songs plus reinterpretations of classic country, bluegrass and roots material. Dede is a nationally recognized vocalist while Randy is a well-established singer songwriter and banjoist. Together with Ira Gitlin on bass and Tom McLaughlin on mandolin, Big Howdy sounds unlike any other band. And that's the way they like it.

Jerry McCoury

We have the honor of showcasing the great Jerry McCoury, brother of Del, a superb bass player/singer and legend in his own right! In addition to spending time performing and recording with Del, Jerry has played music with an impressive list of other bluegrass greats.

Jerry McCoury began his musical career as a teenager, playing in bands in Baltimore, Northeastern Maryland, and Southern Pennsylvania. These included Keith Daniels and the Blue Ridge Ramblers, Marvin Howell and the Franklin County Boys and Jack Cooke and the Virginia Mountain Boys. In 1963, brother Del joined Bill Monroe’s Bluegrass Boys, and Jerry landed a job with Red Allen and the Kentuckians with Porter Church on banjo and David Grisman on mandolin. In the late 60s and early 70s, Jerry worked with Don Reno and Bill Harrell, touring and appearing in their television show in Washington. Next, he rejoined brother Del, anchoring that band with his solid bass playing and a high lonesome vocal style that blended perfectly. Del and Jerry recorded several albums during their time working together. In the 2000s to 2010s, Jerry worked with the Scott Brannon band out of Martinsburg Virginia. Lately, Jerry has been performing with his own band, playing several festivals and concert dates.

Tom Mindte

Head of Patuxent Music and bandleader of Patuxent Partners, stores an extensive record collection at his studio in Rockville, Maryland.

Tom’s own musical interests lie primarily in bluegrass as well, owing to his own fascination with the mandolin and the music of Bill Monroe. Long before starting the label, he frequented bluegrass festivals and shows in the Capitol region, and developed a fondness for popular performer Buzz Busby. Soon he was playing in Buzby’s band, and Mindte continues to work his mandolin magic whenever the opportunity arises amidst his busy schedule as chief engineer and label head.
