David Chappell Band w/Special Guest Anthony Pirog

2:00pm • $15 • Tickets on Eventbrite and at the door if still available

David Chappell a Washington, DC native, is one of the most sought after and respected musicians in the area. For the last several years, he has won the Washington Area Music Awards (WAMMIES) for 'Musician of the Year', 'Rock Instrumentalist of the Year', and 'Roots Rock Instrumentalist of the Year'.

Anthony Pirog Excerpt from Guitar.com article: “Anthony Pirog’s work is otherworldly – feverish in its delivery and interstellar in its complexity – but his feet have long been planted on the ground in Washington DC. When he was a kid he soaked up the city’s music, studying Danny Gatton and blues transplant Roy Buchanan while grunge giants raged in the long twilight of the revolution summer.

But what’s the most DC thing a DC musician can do? Well, they could start a band with members of Fugazi and put out records on legendary DC punk-indie label Dischord. That would do it.

The resulting band, The Messthetics, are a freewheeling power-trio orbiting Pirog’s pyrotechnic guitars and the rhythm section of bassist Joe Lally and drummer Brendan Canty, who proved themselves two of the best to ever do it across six LPs with the post-hardcore giants.”

Pete Ragusa Drummer with: Tom Principato Band, Scott Ramminger & The Crawstickers, Moonshine Society, Dave Chappell, Patty Reese, Catfish Hodge, Tommy Lepson.

John Previti Award-winning bassist John Previti grew up in the Southern Maryland-D.C. area during the early sixties, immersed in the region’s bubbling cauldron of musical styles: swing, country, jazz, R&B, soul and the roots of rockabilly. He was famed Washington, DC guitarist Danny Gatton’s bass player for eighteen years, from 1976-1994. John’s first recording as a leader, “Swinging Lullabies For My Rosetta” (Mapleshade Records) has received tremendous reviews. Other recent recordings include a Tribute to Danny Gatton with Big Joe Mayer and Joe Stanley, and a swing session with John Cocuzzi, Alan Vaché and Big Joe. Over the years, John hass won a number of awards for his rare talent. These include WAMA "Wammie" awards for Musician of the Year, Instrumentalist of the Year, and Album of the Year.

SOUL CRACKERS

Take some of the greatest party music ever made, make sure it’s sung & played by a band that has made a career out of belting out those sweet soul sounds - and you've got yourself a REAL good time — meet the SOUL CRACKERS!

Their music encompasses Memphis & Motown soul, and features timeless songs by artists like Otis Redding, Average White Band, Martha & The Vandellas & Stevie Wonder among many others. This is the music that brings all ages and personalities together to a dance party. The SOUL CRACKERS grew up with this music and honor it with the legitimacy of a crackerjack soul horn band from the 60's.

Lead vocalist Tommy Lepson has won numerous "BEST VOCALIST" awards (WAMMIES) from the Washington Area Music Association and is considered a singer's singer. Possessing a stunning and powerful voice, Tommy conveys all the joy and passion that makes this music come alive.  His blue-eyed soulful voice is world class.  He is joined by The Too Much Sisters — two stellar vocalists Anita King and Caz Gardiner, and together they pull off those beautiful Motown harmonies.

On guitar is Paul Bell, who played with Nils Lofgren and The Nighthawks.  The horn section includes Chris Hutton (trumpet) and Wayne Sulc (sax), and completing the band are Spencer Hoopes (keyboards); Chuck Sullivan (drums); and Ronnie Newmyer (bass) who have been a solid rhythm section for decades.  This is a tight soulful 9-piece band that will literally drive you to the dance floor with their signature medleys and inspire you with three-part harmonies and amazing solos.

This band is the real deal.

Formed in 1982, the SOUL CRACKERS were a full time performing powerhouse on the East Coast bar circuit for many years. Headlining shows such as the Adams Morgan Day Festival and clubs like the Bayou and the Wax Museum led to a command performance at the White House in 1994

They have played every type of function possible and specialize in clubs, parties, anniversaries, corporate events, weddings and festivals. Soul Crackers has recorded several CDs, including: LIVE at the Barns of Wolf Trap (2003); Soul Crackers, 30 Years of Soul (2011); Soul Crackers, 30 Years of Soul, Volume 2 (2015); and A Soulful Christmas released in December 2018 — all available on ITunes and CD Baby.

Sings and plays mid-century modern singer-songwriter music. What’s that? Don’t ask him; he made it up.

Charlie writes (and covers) songs about love, loss, hope, bewilderment, wistful longing, busted romance, modern technology, existential dread, and (of course) drinking.

If country music is three chords and the truth, then what Charlie’s after is four chords and the ambiguity. And you can't spell ambiguity without Am.

The first Saturday of each month Big Howdy hosts a showcase featuring a special guest!

Special Guest: Billy Harrison & Haywire

We are a Bluegrass Band comprised of a Brother/ Sister Duo featuring male and female lead vocals, high energy, great harmonies and excellent musicians.

After a 20 year hiatus Billy Harrison decided it is time to return to playing the music he so loved in his earlier years. With assistance from Terry Wittenberg and Billy’s “baby sister” Terry DiPaula they have formed a bond with tight harmonies and great musical arrangements along with instrumentation.

The band hails out of the old “bluegrass hot bed being the outskirts of Washington D.C. and Baltimore, MD.

Performing with high energy they do not hang their hats on Traditional Bluegrass, but bend the rules to put themselves out on the edge with doing their own arrangements / compilations of some very familiar classic rock songs. That is where the “haywire” comes into play.

Sarah BorgesEric Ambel

One way or another, Sarah Borges connects with casual mastery. Whether it’s with the comrades she’s collaborated with over nearly 20 sparkling years of music-making, or the vivid portraits of people’s lives – and occasionally her own – she’s sketched in scores of emotionally resonant songs.  But most of all, Borges has built a loyal following by connecting, through her own charismatic, down-to-earth spirit, with her audience – whether they’re longtime fans from back when she broke through with her terrific “Silver City” debut in 2004, or newcomers just now joining the party.

Fast forward to the early months of 2020, when the life-altering global pandemic hit populations hard. Closer to home, the crisis not only suddenly, jarringly halted performers touring or playing shows large or small, but also quashed the creative chemistry that comes from musicians getting together and jamming in the same room. As an artist whose lifeblood flowed from these real-life exchanges of camaraderie and community, the Boston-based Borges was faced with perhaps the most daunting question of her professional career: How to connect and continue as a vital and viable working artist amid a frightfully uncertain future fraught with unknowns.

Kevin Gordon Trio

Kevin Gordon

“He’s amazing.” –Jim Lauderdale

“Dude’s a juke-joint professor emeritus”–Rolling Stone

Kevin Gordon’s Louisiana is a strange place. It’s a place where restless teens road trip to where the highway dead-ends at the Gulf of Mexico; a place where prisoners who are in for life compete in a rodeo while the town watches; where a character can get lost in the humid afternoon and where religion may not signify hope; and where rivers, never far away, carry secrets behind levees. “One of the things I like about it and am mystified by is that what passes for normal in Louisiana would not make the grade elsewhere,” he says.

The kicker? All of these postcards are based on true stories. It’s a place that he’s been exploring for twenty years now, on the eve of the release of his astonishing new album “Tilt And Shine” on Crowville Media. It is work that has earned him fans like noted author and Elvis Presley biographer Peter Guralnick; New West Records artist Buddy Miller; journalist, songwriter, and Country Music Hall of Fame staffer Peter Cooper; Todd Snider; head of the Americana Music Association Jed Hilly; and Lucinda Williams, with whom Kevin dueted on the song “Down To The Well” (which was featured prominently on an Oxford American compilation).

Before you even hear his vivid lyrics, you start feeling the sound of that ’56 Gibson ES- 125 tuned down to open D, often with the tremolo flowing like a river, and an unstoppable groove distilled from swamp blues and Sun Records. His MFA from the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop allows him to capture it with a degree of precision. As the New York Times put it in its headline of a feature on Kevin, “A Musician Or A Poet? Yes to Both.”

Kevin sums it up, “There are so many stories in north Louisiana and it’s a place that nobody pays attention to. For me, you can feel the arc of time passing there. I’m captivated by the power of strong memories—those films that run continuously in your mind, if you let ‘em.” With “Tilt and Shine,” those movies translate into rock n’roll poetry.

Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys

Since forming in 1988 in Southern California, Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys have become one of the world’s most beloved Americana/Roots acts, drawing from the deep musical waters that flow just beneath the surface of Rock & Roll’s fertile soil. A childhood passion for Country, Doo-Wop, and Rhythm & Blues 45s led Sandy (born Robert Williams) to pursue a singing career as a teenager, beginning a life in music that continues decades later. And as his personal record collection continues to grow (75,000 and counting), so does the depth of the musical influences that stream through his songwriting and singing style. A critically acclaimed tribute to Tex-Mex hero Freddy Fender, released at the beginning of the 2020 lockdown, points the way forward for Big Sandy and his Fly-Rite Boys as they continue on a path of musical growth. After nearly 35 years on the road, and more than two dozen releases to their credit, they remain key figures on the ever-changing Americana circuit, both on record and in live appearances.

Big Boy Little

"Blues for Grownups"

The deep, deep blues. The kind of blues you used to hear on a distant radio station broadcasting from somewhere down south, late at night.  The kind of blues where you wake up early in the morning and all you can think of is your lover and you wonder where they've gone.  The kind of blues that makes you want to go somewhere and dance or shout or just be alive.  Those kinds of blues.

Bret Littlehales “Big Boy Little” has been singing and playing blues harp in the Washington, DC area since 1967.  He’s opened for such blues greats as B.B. King, Koko Taylor and Junior Wells.  The Big Boy Little Band was honored to represent the DC Blues Society at the Int’l Blues Challenge in 2010 and placed in the Top 10 Finals out of 110 blues bands from around the world and Matt Kelley won the coveted Albert King Award for top guitarist.  The band also features "Wolf" Crescenze on bass and El Torro (drums).

Richard Green & Scott Mattern

Richard Green & Scott Mattern

5:30pm • NO COVER! • Happy Hour 4-8

Richard Green

“executing” classic blues songs and delivering rambling, inappropriate commentary.

Green has infested the East Coast blues scene for nearly five decades.  He gained notoriety in the mid-70s as leader of the Charlottesville Allstars, cited by Rolling Stone as “just about the best blues band in the Southeast.” RS made particular note of Green’s reading of Muddy Waters’

“Forty Days and Forty Nights” as “an expression of desolation imbued with Biblical wrath.”

Green and Allstars colleague Doug Jay went on to form DC’s Choirboys (along with Dietle’s jefe Thomas Bowes), running through the mid-90s, until the need to feed a growing family propelled him through a series of “soul-sucking big-boy jobs.” He continued to work sporadically as a sideman, briefly resurfaced in the early 2000s in the House of Beauty, along with Bowes, Louie Newmyer, and Jim Steele, and led the Allstars through a series of reunions from 2006-2018.

Decades of noise exposure gradually eroded Green’s hearing to the point where, in 2018, he decided that he could no longer reliably perform with bands.

When the pandemic hit, Green began livestreaming solo sets and now has reemerged, cicada-like, to once again inflict desolation and biblical wrath on an unsuspecting public.

Scott Mattern

DC-area native Scott Mattern is a blues and jazz guitarist who has been playing local clubs and concerts since the mid-1970s. Scott is known for his remarkable range, easily toggling between raw blues, jump swing, and classic jazz styles. He has played and recorded with Chris Polk, Ursula Ricks, the Moonlighters, Steve Potter, Flatfoot Sam and the Educated Fools, Fast Eddie and the Slowpokes and many others, and has toured with guitarist/vocalist Deborah Coleman throughout the United States and Europe. Currently he is a member of the blues/rock band Exit 10 and performs in duo with guitarist/vocalist Richard Green

DC Bluegrass Union Songwriter Showcase

Host: Shannon Leigh Reynolds

Come join DCBU for the first in our songwriter's rounds series at Hank Dietle's Tavern. In January, we'll be featuring some of the area's best - Dave Zelonka, Seth Mitchell, and Gage Rhodes! Join us these excellent musicians trade songs and stories.

Dave Zelonka is a singer, songwriter, and guitar picker hailing from central Maryland. His sound is heavily influenced by bluegrass traditions, infused with the spirit of the punk rock he grew up on. Dave’s songs feature lyrics steeped in thoughtful storytelling and rich imagery, harmonies inspired by The Stanley Brothers, and intricate yet melodic guitar breaks. Having previously released albums with The Warren G. Hardings and Ampersand Stringband (winner of Charm City Bluegrass Festival’s 2016 Battle of the Bands), he is excited to share Something, a solo album of all-new original tunes, with the world.

Seth Mitchell is a bluegrass & Americana multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, and band leader. His original songs reveal both a distinctive knack for tuneful explorations on many themes and deep roots in the singer-songwriter tradition. In 2024, he released his third album of original songs, Glen Burnie Man. Seth performs across the Mid-Atlantic region, including regular appearances with the Seth Mitchell Band — a fou- piece bluegrass ensemble — and as a sideman on guitar, bass, mandolin, or as a utility player for numerous friends and collaborators.

Gage Rhodes is an indie folk singer-songwriter from the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Gage and his band, The Rural Depression, do not mind talking about the funny, dark, strange paths we find ourselves on. Influenced by a lifetime of strangeness, trouble, and eclectic music tastes, Gage Rhodes and The Rural Depression try to make honest songs for their listeners to enjoy.

Dave, Seth, and Gage are joined by DCBU's Shannon Leigh Reynolds. Shannon released her debut album Triple Shot in 2023 to favorable reviews from Bluegrass Today and Bluegrass Unlimited magazines. Her album charted at #4 on FAI’s best album chart for September 2023 and won a Wammie for Best Folk/Bluegrass Album Award in 2024. She fronts her own band, Shannon Leigh and The Good Bygones and can be seen all around the DC area.

He is a four-time International Bluegrass Music Association Male Vocalist of the Year and a venerated presence on the national bluegrass scene. Danny grew up listening to the music his father Bob played and enjoyed hearing the sounds of classic bluegrass like Red Allen, Mac Martin, Bill Monroe, the Stanleys, Reno and Smiley, and the Osbornes -- in addition to old-time mountain music and traditional country music. Once you hear Danny sing, it is no surprise that he lists George Jones and Vern Gosdin as major influences in his singing.
