Jay Byrd w/ Jerry Del Rosso
5:30pm • Happy Hour • No Cover
Jay Byrd
Jason (Jay) Byrd has been a professional guitarist, singer, and songwriter since his late teens. In his early twenties, he co-founded the blues-rock trio The Groov with Kerry Brooks, and in 1996 joined the then-Grateful Dead cover band Wavy Train. Byrd's original songs and guitar work helped Wavy Train to forge a sound that combined pop-oriented melodies with extended improvisation. After moving to the Washington, DC area in 2001, Jason began crafting songs with a decidedly Americana bent. An award-winning songwriter (NewSong, Mid-Atlantic Songwriting Contest, Bernard-Ebb Finalist), Jason continues to write and perform original roots-influenced music. Jay’s new album, At Home Again, is set for release in 2022. His previous band, South Rail, has released three EPs, a self-titled debut in 2012, "Stars" (2014), produced by Don Was, and most recently, “Take The Wheel” (2018).
Throughout the years with Wavy Train, South Rail and as a solo artist, Jay has opened for Little Feat, Chely Wright, Cary Morin, Don Dixon & Marti Jones, Kevin Gordon, Caroline Rose, Yarn, etc. and has shared stages with String Cheese Incident, Tom Constanten, Col. Bruce Hampton, Ratdog and Steve Winwood, among many others.
Jay’s song, Daydream Daze was recently featured on the ABC show 911, and his song “At Home Again” is playing in Ep. 1 during the restaurant scene of the Netfix show "The Waterfront."
Jerry Del Rosso
Plays upright and electric, and frankly, we can't decide which we prefer. Jerry has been playing in the area for several decades, and in all genres. Some of them include the Terri & The Back Alley Rhythm Cats, U-Liners, Hollertown, Doug Stevenson & the Spades, and American Touristers.

New LIVE album drops
in Spring 2025 on vinyl!
Washington, DC soul/pop artist Eric Scott is one of the Mid-Atlantic region’s top go-to musicians for touring/recording artists and fans alike. A first-call bassist for live gigs and studio work, Eric has countless domestic and international studio and tour credits. In addition he has built a rare following as a songwriter and recording artist, headlining many of the area’s top festivals and concert venues, and sharing the stage with a diverse array of artists including James Brown, B.B. King, Mavis Staples, Aaron Neville, Booker T. Jones, REO Speedwagon, Foreigner, and Jon Anderson of YES. Eric’s recent collaborations include working with Roger Waters, Tom Morello, Billy Corgan, Jake Clemons, and G.E. Smith as a vocalist for the Wounded Warriors MusiCorps Band.
Eric Scott is a 18-time Wammie winner (Washington Area Music Association), including the 2020 Wammie Award for ‘Best Pop Album’ for his 5th full-length release, The Charm City Sessions, co-produced with Scott Smith at The Wood and Stone Room - Baltimore. His music has been featured on ABC-TV, CBS-TV, Showtime, Cinemax, The WB, and several major motion pictures and indie films. His voice has been featured in international and regional ad campaigns for HGTV, NAT GEO, Ford, Chevy, Jeep, Chrysler, DC Lottery, and many more.
Currently, Eric is working to support his latest release, Peace Bomb, including the single, “Scene of the Crime” (video produced by Nashville-based Neighborhoods Apart Productions), a songwriting collaboration with DC area hit songrwriter Todd Wright. Calling his new music “Modern Throwback Soul,” Scott’s offerings are always evolving, yet maintain his signature funky, upbeat, soulful, and socially aware perspective. He is unafraid of a pop hook, and his gospel-soul drenched voice is the perfect vehicle to deliver rich emotion. About performing live, Eric says, “I want to get booty’s movin’...and get people thinking about the world we live in. We all need that connection, especially now. If I can help foster connection for people, then I’m a rich man."
About the new release, Peace Bomb
Eric Scott didn’t want to “re-create” the sound of '70s Soul, but has unapologetically applied a fresh coat of paint to it with his new, modern “Throwback Soul” album PEACE BOMB. Recorded with multi-platinum producer Jim Ebert, the album is packed with stellar talent, including three songs mixed by Jeff Juliano (Dan+Shay, Florida Georgia Line, John Mayer, Jason Mraz, Shawn Mendes) percussion by Sue Hadjopoulos (Cyndi Lauper, Joe Jackson, Simple Minds), and Mastered by Dave Collins (Madonna, Sting, Metallica).
The record hits a funky and joyful stride immediately as horns, groovy guitars, sassy background vocals, and Scott’s signature, soul-drenched tenor propel 13 songs of love, self-empowerment, and peace. On the topical Motown influenced title track, Scott warns of “an epidemic gaining ground,” and for the need to “stop pointing fingers and spread more love around. The world needs help right now,” says Scott. “Sometimes art MUST imitate life.”

Justin Lees Jazz Trio
Justin Lees started playing guitar professionally in the late 70’s and studied guitar with several local prominent guitarists in Washington D.C., including Rick Whitehead, Paul Bollenbach (local to DC at the time), Bill Biesecker, Danny Gatton, and guitarists not so local (including Herb Ellis and Emily Remler).
Although stylistically diverse, Justin's main focus is on a straight ahead approach to jazz steeped in the fifties tradition of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie and rooted in the styles of Charlie Christian and T Bone Walker. The feeling of Swing and the Blues is a constant. While in Washington D.C., he worked as a freelance musician with a variety of people that have included Ron Holloway, Dick Morgan, Keeter Betts, Cindy Cain and others. At that time, you could here him every Monday night with his own trio at the One Step Down, Washington D.C.’s premier Jazz club, until it’s closing. He performed at Blues Alley, 219 Club, and Constitution Hall plus.

The Skip Castro Band
9:00pm • $25 in advance on Eventbrite • $30 at the door if still available
The Skip Castro Band
It began a long time ago. 1978 to be exact. Four musicians, out of work at the same time got together because honestly, they liked to play music. Thus, the Skip Castro Band was born. A mutual love of rhythm 'n blues, swing, boogie woogie and rock 'n roll became the foundation. Over the next ten years, Skip Castro would become staples on the East Coast between Boston and Atlanta playing every bar, club, music hall, and college in between. All the while having a great time. Called one of the best party bands ever, Skip Castro brings the party every time they take the stage.
And who haven’t they played with? Muddy Waters, Big Joe Turner, Bo Diddley, James Brown, Chuck Berry, Buddy Guy, James Cotton, Albert Collins, Stevie Ray Vaughan, the Yardbirds, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, George Thorogood and the Destroyers, the Nighthawks, the Kinks, Kenny Loggins and a host of others....
Fast forward 46 years and the same four guys are still playing together. Why? Because even though they stopped playing full time a while back, there's a unique groove and spirit that exists when Skip plays. They've played with other musicians, but the greatest satisfaction comes when these four get together. Who are these guys anyhow? Undoubtedly, you've been asked that countless times. Well, here's everything you ever wanted to know about them!
Danny Beirne, Vocals/Keyboards: Was born in East Orange, New Jersey, and raised to the sounds of the Four Seasons and other Jersey bands. He migrated to Charlottesville at age 17 to play bass with his brother’s band and has played music professionally since that day. His machine gun piano attack and manic stage personality always kicks things into overdrive. His favorite movie is Goodfellas.
Charlie Pastorfield, Vocals/Bass: Came to the University of Virginia from the U.S. Virgin Islands, and has played guitar and bass in a long list of Charlottesville bands including The Believers, Mama Tried, Alligator, and The Gladstones. His favorite movie is Ikiru.
Rico Antonelli, Drums: Richmond’s long time premiere drummer and jokester extraordinaire, Rico has kept the beat for many of music’s finest, including countless years in the Robbin Thompson Band. Rico was also known as Pat Benatar’s drummer when she lived in Richmond. His favorite movie is Wizard of Oz (original version!).
Bo Randall, Vocals/Guitar: Chose the University of Virginia for a great education, but fate had something different in mind. He joined local legends Captain Tunes and his Fabulous Noteguns in 1974, immediately blowing away audiences with his incendiary guitar playing. He loves playing golf, and his favorite movie is Almost Famous.
What else is there to say?

Corey Arceneaux and the Zydeco Hot Peppers
Corey Arceneaux is a Louisiana born and bred zydeco accordionist and band leader. He learned the accordion at a young age and formed his first band while still in high school. His great-uncles, musicians Rodney Bernard and the legendary Fernest Arceneaux, were his inspirations. As he found his style, Clifton Chenier and Stanley “Buckwheat” Dural, Jr. became his favorites, and Buckwheat also became a mentor and friend.
Corey and the Zydeco Hot Peppers perform internationally and domestically – wowing dignitaries and crowds at special events, festivals, clubs and Mardi Gras balls through the years. They also recorded five studio albums. Simultaneously, Corey has been a radio DJ for about 30 years, which has allowed him to promote Zydeco and the Creole culture of Southwest Louisiana to a larger audience. Currently, he hosts “Hot Sauce Saturday” on KFXZ/Z105.9 FM/www.z1059.com on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Central time.
After moving to Virginia, Corey connected with area musicians with experience in and a passion for Zydeco music. They jammed, and everything came together like a pot of gumbo. Ben Holmes started playing Zydeco in the 1980s. He’s toured and recorded with Al Rapone and the Zydeco Express and the Grammy-winning Queen Ida and the Bon Temps Zydeco band. Doug Bell is a veteran musician in the DC area and has performed across the eastern U.S. for nearly 25 years. He has played in bands such as Zydeco Crayz, The Louisiana Sugar Kings, Charlie Sayles and Union Mission Blues, Savoir Faire Cajun Band and Canebreak Cajun Band. His passion is for authentic southern American roots music, especially the dance styles of south Louisiana.

Pat Clark is a professional drummer, guitarist, and private music teacher from Silver Spring, Maryland. As a kid, he went to New Orleans, Louisiana every year for Jazz Fest so Zydeco is in his bones. Pat has been influenced from artists such as Taylor Swift, Dashboard Confessional, Stanton Moore and Los Lobos.

Afton Wolfe
5:30 • Happy Hour • No Cover $10 Suggested donation
If you’re tired of wimpy mainstream vocals of pimply vocalists who haven’t lived yet — this is the cure. Wolfe sings with authority, experience & realism. He pours it dramatically but never artificially. - Americana Highways
In Afton Wolfe’s latest EP, Twenty-Three, the Nashville-based artist, vocalist, musician, songwriter and collector/inhabiter of powerful songs, finds those rare and unusual spaces between dreams and wide awakenings, sorrow and joy. Although he jokes as being “pathologically insecure and awkward,” the songs on this five-song release are hardly shy or reserved — balanced with emotional elegance and fearless sentiment, and presented with vocal confidence backed by soul singers, Regina McCrary and Melanie Dewey, rich saxophone and trumpet sounds, and melodies that stretch deep into your “Late Night Radio” visions.
Afton Wolfe has worn the hats of many humans from philosopher to lawyer, neuroscientist to bartender, from Washington to Tennessee, but his roots are in those of the rock, blues, and soul music of Mississippi. Armed with an additional deep love for Oscar Wilde, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits and Elvis Costello, Wolfe’s music aptly sits somewhere between these influences and his youngest musical experiences singing onstage with his mother at the State Boulevard Baptist Church in Meridian, MS. With a few starts and stops in recording and touring, between studying and sampling alternate means of making a living, sometimes a defender and sometimes a defendant before judges, Wolfe has remained a consistent songwriter reflecting on all facets of his wandering.
So far in 2023, Wolfe has toured the East Coast, appeared for the second season at the Tropic of Cancer Concert Series in Todos Santos Mexico hosted by the band Cordovas, released Twenty-Three and the video for “ Cry .” And he can always be found as a featured guest at the legendary East Nashville annual Tom Wait’s tribute to raise money for Second Harvest, led and curated by Mary Sack with a collection of OG artists that
have had a significant impact on the birth and growth of the highly revered East Nashville music scene.
The “Cry” music video was directed and produced by Duende Vision, one of East Nashville’s most creative teams in Americana Rock n Roll visuals, and also creators of the emotionally and visually stunning video for “ Late Nite Radio ," starring East Nashville artist favorites Laura Rabell and Tom Mason. Staying true to his love for his artist community, Wolfe enlisted Tommy Womack, author, songwriter and member of the band
Government Cheese, to play the main character in “Cry” - a story of mourning that unfolds into profound joy when Wolfe’s young niece appears in a tutu with a whoopee cushion.
Other highlights in Wolfe’s catalog of releases include his 2021 album release King for Sale, said by Blues Matters , “Musically, it staggers between rough country blues and Steely Dan getting in a brawl with a proper jazz band.” In 2022, Wolfe also teamed up with Mississippi artist, Cary Hudson, for a single and video release of the popular “ Ooh La La ” by Faces.

The Strangers
12:00
The Strangers
The Strangers came together in 1989. Initially called by that name because members came from different bands and had never played together before, the name stuck due to the band's revolving door policy of rotating singers and instrumentalists. Right from its first gig, it was obvious that the chemistry of the group worked - with a core group remaining constant and additional members brought in as required.
Many of the members are seasoned musicians. Over the years, the Strangers have been in much demand playing at events both large and small. They played for two Obama Pearl Presidential Gala Balls – one for each term.
Since many of the members grew up in the '60s and '70s, their music is heavily informed by soul, roots rock and roll, blues, R&B, and, occasionally, jazz. In its full configuration, the band is a nine-piece group. Horns, guitars, keyboard, drums, and bass guitar accompany the distinct vocals and harmonies.

Grant Peeples with Teresa Jimenez

Grant Peeples • Teresa Jimenez
Grant is a self-described “tree-hugger that watches NASCAR,” Grant Peeples is known for his axe-sharp socio-political tunes, raucous humor and heart-gigging ballads.
He is the recipient of the Focus Foundation Award for Creative Excellence, which cited the “humor, compassion and wisdom of his songs,” and their "unflinching social insight and cultural acuity.” Grant tours coast to coast, and is a repeat performer at Moccasin Creek Music Festival, Antlers & Acorns Songwriters Festival, The Woody Guthrie Folk Festival, the 30A Songwriters Festival, and The Florida Folk Festival, Word of South Festival of Literature & Music, among others. In June 2023 he made his debut at the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival.
He has been a keen observer of the American condition for five decades, ever since a friend introduced him to the music of Bob Dylan. Through many years on the road, running a night club/music venue in Tallahassee, and after a ten-year stint on an isolated island off the coast of Nicaragua, Peeples turned to writing with a vengeance. He wrote poetry and songs that turned a critical eye on American culture and identity, the very definition of contemporary folk music.
January 2019 marked a second tour in The Netherlands, where FolkForum.nl described him “…a pure storyteller, in the best American folk tradition…” and his show “…one of those gems that you will remember for a long time…”
He's the musician walking most closely in Woody Guthrie's footsteps-Greg Johnson, The Blue Door

Rev Billy C. Wirtz
5:00pm - $15 Tickets on Eventbrite and at Door
Reverend Billy C. Wirtz
Billy is a comic genius, gifted pianist and American musicologist who defies easy classification. “I like to think of myself as the Victor Borge of the blues,” states the Reverend, but Billy goes way beyond Borge both in scope of subject matter (from politics to social commentary) and, of course, in taste. In fact, no theme is too extreme, taboo, or undignified for the Reverend, so long as it garners a good laugh.
Billy C. Wirtz was born in Aiken, SC, on September 28, 1954. One of his most treasured childhood memories was watching the gospel programs broadcasted from the Bell Auditorium in nearby Augusta, GA. In 1963, his family moved to Washington, D.C. where he eventually landed a job at Glen’s Music, a record store which catered to black music, including R&B, jazz, and spirituals. “I spent all day long listening to Julius Cheeks, Clarence Fountain, and the Dixie Hummingbirds. I was in heaven,” said Billy. In 1971, he attended a gospel concert featuring, among others, the 615 pound Gloria Spencer, billed as “The World’s Largest Gospel Singer” and the Mighty Clouds of Joy. “It was like an epiphany for me, a revelation to experience something like that live. It left an indelible impression on me,” added Billy. While working at Glen’s he was also inspired by recordings of pianists Albert Ammons, Meade Lux Lewis, Big Maceo, and Otis Spann to name a few. He took up the keyboard while in high school, but it wasn’t until the tail end of his college career at James Madison University (from which he graduated with a degree in special education) did he play the instrument in earnest.
After graduation, as Wirtz was filling out applications to start a career in teaching, Chicago blues pianist Sunnyland Slim came through Virginia on tour. After attending a performance, Wirtz introduced himself and discovered Slim was headed to the next gig via Greyhound Bus. Billy volunteered to chauffer the blues legend to the next show and struck up a lasting friendship. Later, Sunnyland wrote thanking Billy and invited him to stay at his home if he ever made it to Chicago – an invitation that found Billy heading to the Windy City to accept. He stayed with Sunnyland Slim, learning directly from the master, going to Chicago niteclubs and meeting blues artists he revered as a youngster. This taste of the musicians’ lifestyle ignited the idea that he himself might make a living playing the piano. His first official blues band was Sidewinder, a group from his college town of Harrisonburg, VA, and later was able to hook up with the Charlottesville All Stars, a larger ensemble with similar blues tastes.
As the 80’s dawned, Billy Wirtz had already earned the reputation of being a gifted sideman and became much sought after by many Washington, D.C area roots bands, including the legendary Root Boy Slim & the Sex Change Band, Evan Johns and the H-Bombs, and the original contingent of the Nighthawks, which included Jimmy Thackery on guitar. By 1982, Billy had grown weary of the incertitude of freelancing and decided to embark on a solo career. About the same time Billy declared his independence his first solo LP was recorded live in a bar in Hickory, N.C., Salvation Through Polyester, on the No Big Deal label of Atlanta. In 1988, Wirtz released Deep Fried and Sanctified on the Kingsnake label – a turning point for him in many ways. “I think we originally pressed about 2000 copies of this before leasing it to Hightone in 1989 and it marked my long and productive association with that great label,” said Billy.

Sarah Borges Band featuring: Eric Ambel
6:00pm • $20 • Tickets on Eventbrite and at the door if still available
One way or another, Sarah Borges connects with casual mastery. Whether it’s with the comrades she’s collaborated with over nearly 20 sparkling years of music-making, or the vivid portraits of people’s lives – and occasionally her own – she’s sketched in scores of emotionally resonant songs. But most of all, Borges has built a loyal following by connecting, through her own charismatic, down-to-earth spirit, with her audience – whether they’re longtime fans from back when she broke through with her terrific “Silver City” debut in 2004, or newcomers just now joining the party.
Fast forward to the early months of 2020, when the life-altering global pandemic hit populations hard. Closer to home, the crisis not only suddenly, jarringly halted performers touring or playing shows large or small, but also quashed the creative chemistry that comes from musicians getting together and jamming in the same room. As an artist whose lifeblood flowed from these real-life exchanges of camaraderie and community, the Boston-based Borges was faced with perhaps the most daunting question of her professional career: How to connect and continue as a vital and viable working artist amid a frightfully uncertain future fraught with unknowns.

Chuck Underwood Trio w/ Special Guest Chuck Karner
5:30pm • NO COVER!
Special guest: Chuck Karner on drums
• Drummer Chuck Karner is one of Baltimore’s jazz treasures. “Chuck is a unique musician who brings a childlike mischievousness to his jazz stylings,” says pianist Matthew George, who has often played with Karner. “He is an entertaining person as well as performer, and it has been a pleasure playing with him these many years.” Liz Fixsen, who has been involved with Karner in various jazz settings, gives testimony to his playfulness. She recalls how once at a Django jazz jam at The Avenue Kitchen in Hamden, he played “percussion” while seated at the bar, using metal twizzle sticks and beverage glasses with various quantities of liquid, and other objects. Fixsen says, “Chuck’s playing is always confident and tasteful. He is never intrusive, but he is never just marking time. He is always playing something interesting and inventive, sometimes changing the groove in the middle of the tune, just to liven things up.”
• A collaborative musical endeavor between drummer Byron McWilliams, bassist Mark Lysher and guitarist Chuck Underwood. The trio’s main goal is to create reactionary improvised music across the complete musical spectrum. Although most of the group’s repertoire is from the jazz canon it is by no means limited to that genre, borrowing from folk, rock, blues, and avant-garde. With equal parts of finesse and energy, the trio creates an irresistible musical experience.
